Check that these are open and not blocked by furnishings, artwork, or clutter, as blocked openings can reduce heating performance and efficiency.
Open the main panel to access the inside of the unit and use a vacuum to clean the burners and blower compartment. Clean the flame sensor with an emery cloth. To blow dust off the pilot and hot surface ignitor, use a drinking straw.
Use lightweight motor oil to lubricate motor bearings and blower shaft bearings each year; it will help prevent wear and tear.
The burner flame is where the gas ignites to provide a heat source. It should always be blue; if it’s yellow, the burners may be dirty or faulty and the furnace may be releasing carbon monoxide. Call for help right away.
Reducing heat loss can prevent your furnace from working too hard. To do so, replace or improve insulation in walls, ceilings, attics, and ducts. Weatherstripping for garage and entry doors also helps improve efficiency. Also, look for drafts and openings to seal, especially around windows or where pipes/utility lines enter your home.
