For a lot of people, their backyard is their oasis. Whether it’s a vegetable garden or a poolside. It’s our own private escape. A wonderful addition to everyone’s little paradise is a waterfall. You may think that you can not afford to have one, but they’re easier to build than you may think. Take a look at the steps and decide if a private waterfall is right for you.

First, you’ll want to design a concept for your waterfall. Draw up a rough outline of your backyard. Decide where you want the waterfall to be. After you have your location, you can determine how large you want the waterfall to be. To block out street noise, you will want t to be about a foot high with at least a two-inch slope. So try to work it in a way that the waterfall looks natural in its new position.

Once you have the concept mapped out, it is time to outline the pond. You can choose a pre-molded pond tub or you can purchase a pond liner that can be molded to any shape you like. Make sure to outline both the pond and where the rocks and plants will go surrounding it. If the water is coming down as a stream as opposed to a drop-off, make sure you line the path with the pond liner as well.

So the next step is the most labor-intensive. You will need to dig out the hole for your pond. Make sure you are not digging in an area in which you may hit pipes or cables. If you are unsure, call a professional to double-check for you. You don’t want your do-it-yourself relaxing waterfall to become an expensive headache. Determine the depth of your pond based on its size and the size of the pump you have selected to move the water.

Once the hole is dug and the liner placed, it is time to place your pump. The pump will be placed at the base of the pond and tubing will be run to the top for the water to cycle to. Make sure to note whether your pump is submersible or not. Follow all instructions included with the pump.

This can be one of the fun parts. It is time to lay your stones. You can use stones of any size and shape. Lay them out in a way that is both pleasing to you and also covers the pond liner and tubing. So this may take a little trial and error, but the end result will be fantastic.

Now that you have gotten your stones laid out, it is time to fill it up and turn on the pump. You will get to see the fruits of your hard labor. If you are happy with the way it looks, you get to start planting. Select some nice foliage to plant in and around your lovely, custom waterfall. Even add some fish if you like. Now all that’s left to do is sit back and enjoy your new landscaping addition.
